So I am not to sure how to explain the summary of this book because it is best to go into this book not knowing much but I will try my best.

We Were Liars is a suspense novel following a girl, Cady, who returns to her family’s private Island for the summer after she suffered amnesia from two summers ago. As Cady arrives she begins to try to piece together the events that happened that summer that left her with amnesia.

That is pretty much all I can say without spoiling anything for you.

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart Book Review

My Thoughts

I did not see that coming, the ending was quite the plot twist. I wish I would have been able to have figured it out but I definitely did not expect that.

This book is not that long but for some reason it took me FOREVER to read! I pretty much spent most of September trying to get through this book. I would stop and reread things, shake my head, thinking maybe that would clear make things clear. I would also restart chapters over again. I don’t know why I failed to comprehend what was going on in this book. I just wasn’t getting it and because of that I just didn’t like this book.

I believe that part of my problem was I didn’t realize that some parts to the book that I was reading weren’t from the present summer, that they were from two summers ago. I mostly was confused and lost throughout the book which is not an enjoyable reading experience.

It was also hard for me to connect with any of the characters. Our main character Cady has suffered amnesia form an event that happened during summer 15 and this makes her an unreliable narrator. For me there wasn’t much character development to really connect to the characters and feel anything for them. Somethings awful happens and I really didn’t feel as sad as I should have because I wasn’t emotionally connected to them. I did tear up but I cry easily and I think I should have been sobbing from what happened.

The only thing I did like about the book was the writing was beautifully written. The way in which she wrote was poetic and I did really like it. I just wish everything else was good as the writing.

I rated this 2 stars. It just wasn’t my cup of tea. I think that I might read something else by E. Lockhart again and since I did enjoy her writing.
